UPDATE: As recently as June 2020, Bayer has reached verbal agreements to resolve a significant portion of lawsuits filed against it which the company inherited following its acquisition of Monsanto in 2018 for cancer lawsuit. While an estimated 125,000 cancer-related lawsuits have been filed in the United States, this agreement aims to settle between 50,000 and 85,000 of them. The deal includes a $10 billion payout by Bayer in an attempt to end the expensive legal battle. While Bayer has refused to comment on settlements, payouts to individuals can be expected to amount between a few million to a couple thousand.
What You Should Know about cancer lawsuit
Roundup cancer lawsuit is a common weed killer created by Monsanto (now Bayer) and is used worldwide for agricultural and personal use. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and was developed and patented by Monsanto in the 1970’s. Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide and has been classified as “probably carcinogenic” to humans by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
While exposure to glyphosate may lead to certain types of cancer lawsuit, Monsanto has also been accused of falsely marketing Roundup as “safer than table salt” and “practically nontoxic” to humans, birds, and fish. In yet another case out of California, a man who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma was awarded $80.2 million after using Roundup for over 30 years to treat his property.
