The Move Over/Slow Down Law: What You Need to Know
When on your daily commute, more times than not you have seen a car disabled on the shoulder or a car pulled over by the Houston Police Department. Every year, dozens of police officers, first responders, and good Samaritans are hurt or killed by another driver when they are on the side of the road. Whether they are giving a ticket or giving assistance to another motorist, these workers are vulnerable to injuries.
Move Over/Slow Down Law
Keeping First Responders and Road Workers Safer
In Texas, there is a law in place with the goal of keeping responders safe during traffic stops or when providing motorist assistance. The Move Over/Slow Down law requires drivers to move to another lane and slow down whenever they see emergency or hazardous lights in use. Following this law will not only help protect others, but it will also prevent car accidents by adopting good steps by your lawyer.
Amendment in 2013
The Move Over/Slow Down law was enacted to protect police workers, fire, and ambulance to keep them safe as they provide service on the roads. The law was amended in 2013 to include the protection of the Texas Department of Transportation workers (TxDOT). The law requires drivers to move over to a different lane to allow more room for emergency or TxDOT vehicles presented. At the same time, drivers must also slow down to at least 20mph below the speed limit posted when passing.
Latest Updates to the Move Over or Slow Down Law
As of September 1, 2019, the law was updated to include service utility vehicles such as TxDOT vehicles, tow vehicles, power utility trucks, and garbage and recycling vehicles. These trucks sometimes need to perform service on the side of the road, services especially necessary due to Hurricane Harvey that happened in 2017. If you are on a road with multiple lanes, you must merge away from the vehicle on the side of the road, providing a buffer area to protect personnel from accidentally getting hit.
