I was in a car accident. What steps should I take?
Step 1: Check for injuries
The first thing you should do after a car accident is check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.
Step 2: Move to a safe location
Once you have determined that everyone is okay, move your car to a safe location, if possible. If your car is not drivable, turn on your hazard lights and wait for help to arrive inside your vehicle. Standing outside of the car at the scene of an accident could cause further injury.
Step 3: Exchange information with the other driver & take photos and videos of the accident scene
ou will need to exchange insurance information with the other driver involved in the accident. Be sure to get the other driver’s name, phone number, insurance company and policy number. Take pictures and video of the damage to both vehicles as well as any skid marks or other evidence at the scene of the accident. These pictures can be helpful when filing an insurance claim.
Step 4: Call the police
Even if the accident is minor and there are no injuries, you should call the police so that they can file an accident report.
Step 5: Start the insurance claims process
In Texas, many insurance policies require you to report accidents right away. You should always contact your insurance company after an accident. There might be coverage under your policy that can help you, even if the accident was your fault. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) gives money to you if you’re hurt in a car accident, whether or not the accident was your fault.
Step 6: Go to the doctor
If you or the other person is seriously injured, seek medical treatment right away. You are required to help the other driver if they need or ask for medical care. If no one is seriously injured, follow up with your doctor soon after the accident. Injuries from car accidents may not seem bad at first, but they could be serious later on.
Step 7: Get a consultation with a car accident lawyer
Remember that claims adjusters are not always looking out for your best interest. In such situations it can help to seek legal advice; you are more likely to get a fair payout from your insurance company and your claim will be settled sooner. A qualified lawyer can give you a consultation at no cost to you.
